Good dental routine

When it comes to achieving goals, having a routine set in place can help you achieve those goals faster and more thoroughly. A routine is simply a plan that is created and implemented, not complicated, but easy to use. Many people create exercise and diet routines to help them lose weight, while others create a routine to help them successfully save money. Another area where a routine is beneficial is the area of oral health. Cavities, decay, chronic bad breath, and gum disease do not “just happen” – they are the result of not implementing a good dental routine.

Continually ignoring any aspect of your body will cause it to deteriorate, and your mouth is no exception. What the majority of people do not understand is that the most neglected aspect of oral health, flossing, is actually the most important. Dental floss was specifically designed to clean the tight spaces between the teeth. With every meal, snack, and beverage other than water, tiny particles are left behind inside the mouth. These particles cling to the teeth and attract oral bacteria. When the bacteria contact the particles, they begin forming acids and plaque buildup. Floss helps to remove plaque that occurs each day by scraping it off the gum line and from in between the teeth where toothbrush bristles cannot reach. Neglecting flossing your teeth is neglecting your oral health; therefore, it should be a top priority in a good dental routine.

Brushing the teeth at least twice a day with a fluoride tooth paste is also important. Fluoride helps prevent cavities and decay from forming in the teeth, while brushing loosens and brushes away plaque and food particles that accumulate on the surfaces of the teeth. Brushing also helps keep the breath fresh, which is necessary in social and professional situations. When it comes to your toothbrush, it is important that you replace it often. A dirty toothbrush does not do a good job of cleaning your mouth. It is recommended that you replace your toothbrush every three to six months. With regular dental appointments, you should receive a free toothbrush at each visit just in time.

Speaking of dental visits, keeping routine visits a priority is the last step in a good dental routine. Visiting the dentist for professional cleanings and exams will keep your mouth clean and healthy. At Westinghouse Dental, we encourage you to implement a good dental routine to promote a healthy smile.
